Islands and Trains

Islands and Trains provides a space to create railway dioramas with multiple components on procedurally generated islands, resulting in miniature worlds. This sandbox facilitates the creative process without external constraints, functioning without rules, timers or specific objectives. Players are primarily engaged in the design and assembly of their railway systems and surrounding landscapes, gaining satisfaction as they bring these scenes to life.

The placement of each element, from sections of track to landscape features, remains under the creator's control. The main activity in Islands and Trains is to lay out railway lines, which can cross a variety of backgrounds, such as coastal settlements or snowy forests, allowing for freedom in the layout of the tracks. The locomotive can follow such settlements or wind through forested areas, each configuration allowing the player to develop their own visual narrative.

Route design opens up possibilities, such as navigating around mountain formations or building railway crossings over various bodies of water. The creators also populate the islands with animal figures and alter the details of the countryside to suit their vision. The game is deliberately devoid of elements such as points, penalties, or structured missions, thereby maintaining an open-ended gameplay experience. Outcomes that might be considered bugs in other games become random events, often part of the building process and the final diorama.
