Decktamer, the debut Strategy roguelike from developer Horizon Edge and publisher Assemble Entertainment, flips the traditional deckbuilding formula on its head. Instead of passively acquiring cards, you must actively capture or "tame" the mutant creatures you defeat in battle to recruit them to your deck. This twist transforms every encounter in the mysterious, procedurally generated Abyss into a high stakes decision. Do you risk lethal damage to tame a powerful new ally, or simply destroy the threat to survive the current run? The game's setting in a bizarre, deep crater known for its ever more strange and dangerous inhabitants provides a compelling backdrop for this unique mechanic.
The core loop is a tense, turn based combat system where every creature in your deck acts independently each turn, forcing players to master the flow of initiative and predict enemy moves. Further adding to the strategic depth is the ability to transfer abilities between your tamed monsters, allowing you to create devastating hybrid creatures and complex combos not possible in standard deckbuilders. Since creature cards are permanently lost upon death, managing your living deck and protecting your key allies is crucial for long term success.
