Esoteric Ebb

Esoteric Ebb is about the unpredictability of rolling virtual dice, determining the difference between a triumphant resolution to conflict and catastrophic failure. Progression is based on a deep stat system, where each stat has its own intelligence and constantly intervenes in dialogue. Instead of the usual power-building, the player must balance conflicting inner voices vying for control of the situation. Direct confrontations are treated as a last resort, giving way to sophisticated social manipulation. Failing a skill check often yields far more intriguing consequences, forcing the player to adapt to suddenly changing conditions. Ability development is realized through a unique thought tree, seamlessly intertwining current tasks with the protagonist's mental state.

The action takes place in the fantastical metropolis of Norvik, whose architecture conceals a complex political web and social inequality. Within the Esoteric Ebb universe, magical arts have long since become commonplace, radically transforming the economy and everyday life of the city's inhabitants. Mythological creatures can be found on the streets selling newspapers, while powerful factions divide up spheres of influence. The protagonist, a clerical civil servant, actively utilizes otherworldly talents to advance the investigation. The ability to penetrate the minds of others or converse with long-dead witnesses opens up unconventional ways to obtain information. Every decision inevitably affects the balance of power, forcing the investigator to navigate between the interests of warring factions.

The catalyst for major events is the sudden destruction of a tea shop right in the center of the capital. This incident occurs exactly five days before the first-ever democratic elections, threatening to collapse the fragile social order. The journey's starting point proves to be extremely uncomfortable: a cleric awakens on the floor of a morgue among rotting apples and the living dead. Without official support from his superiors, the investigator must unravel a web of conspiracies in gloomy dungeons and luxurious towers on his own. The ultimate goal is not only to find the guilty parties, but also to determine one's own political vector, capable of forever changing the fate of a huge city.
