Ultrapool

A cocktail in hand and a table full of impossible balls: Ultrapool is a colorful arcade roguelike from developer Icedrop Games, published by offbrand games. The game plays like a pool version of modern scoring roguelikes, where every shot feeds a growing score and every score feeds the bar tab. Get comfy, because the night is just starting.

The rules take one minute to learn. Pocketing balls gives you points, points become money, and money buys new balls and improvements at the bar. Each round raises the stakes, and the score targets climb right along with them. The depth comes from the roster: every ball carries a strange effect, and assembling a triangle of complementary abilities is how you craft a build worth bragging about. The bartenders are not easy to impress, and surviving 10 rounds takes more than luck.

The trickshots are where the chaos shines. A ghost ball reappears on the table after being sunk. A chicken ball lays spherical eggs that become extra points. A bomb explodes if you bump it too much, and yes, one of the options is the Earth itself. Anything is welcome at this table as long as it is round and rolls nicely.

Once the basics feel comfortable, the cocktail bar opens. Ask the bartender to mix any two balls and he serves something new, and some of those mixes look like they should break the game wide open. You will need every edge you can get if you want to pull off an all nighter.

Short runs keep the pace brisk, and the anime flavored presentation keeps it charming. Every session deals a different table, a different set of balls, and a different route to the top of the scoreboard. It is easy to start, hard to put down, and always ready for one more rack. Ultrapool is casual sports filtered through roguelike greed, and the bar never closes.
