Wordless Forest

Wordless Forest is a survival FMV (Full Motion Video) game that could very well be more realistic than almost anything else on Steam. The reason is simple: its creator actually spent weeks in the forest filming it. If you're tired of survival games where a stick and stone magically form a tree chopping axe, and a comfortable base can be built in minutes, you might be interested in a title with a much more authentic approach. Solo developer Doğuş Çağrıcı played the lead role and filmed all the footage himself, traveling alone through the wilderness. Essentially, creating the game turned into a full-fledged survival challenge for him.

I filmed myself in dense forests and wilderness areas of four different cities in Turkey over the course of 40 days. Without filming transport, I walked for kilometers, carrying heavy camera equipment on my back, to reach remote locations. According to him, his base was a remote forest boarding house, from which he set out every day to explore areas inhabited by brown bears and wild boars. The nature of the danger varied depending on the location – in Muğla, he waded into icy rivers and worked in soaking wet clothes, while in Antalya, he filmed alone on the edge of treacherous cliffs, where one wrong step could cost him his life.

About This Game

The Steam page and trailer confirm this. In the scene, the protagonist drinks water from puddles, eats raw fish, tries to start a fire, and crosses icy streams. Players will be able to make choices in life-or-death situations – for example, deciding whether to approach a mysterious sound in a forest at night or ignore it. Some decisions are guaranteed to lead to a tragic ending. The trailer features scenes that clearly serve as gameovers the hero falls from a cliff onto the rocks below or is carried lifelessly down river rapids.

The title Wordless Forest refers to its conceptual design: the game is completely devoid of dialogue. This approach aligns it with cinematic survival dramas like "Cast Away," "All Is Lost," and "Trapped," where information is conveyed visually rather than spoken in dialogue or voiceover. It's also interesting that Wordless Forest could very well be the first survival game in FMV format. Similar games have appeared in the horror genre Phantasmagoria immediately comes to mind—but pure survival titles in FMV format are hard to find. According to Chagrydzha, Wordless Forest has been in development for almost three years. A Steam release is planned for August.
