My Merry May with be is a science fiction visual novel and adventure game published by MAGES. Inc. It is a full high definition port of a title first released in 2005, and it gathers the original game, its sequel and additional scenarios into one complete edition.
The package is built like a series collection. The first story, My Merry May, follows Kyosuke Watarase, a student at a boarding school. Out of nowhere, a device arrives from his family who lives abroad. Inside is a Replis, an artificial life form that his father and brother used to research. Kyosuke tries to set its personality into his ideal girl, but an accident creates Reu instead, a girl who looks like a teenager yet acts like a small child.
Reu turns daily life upside down. She cannot follow normal rules, says whatever comes to mind, and pulls Kyosuke into situations he cannot control. He has to hide their shared life from everyone around him, which makes every ordinary school day a small test of patience.
The sequel, My Merry Maybe, swaps the setting. The protagonist is Hiroto Kishimori, a university student who picks a teaching practice in Seidenmachi, a quiet port town slowly losing its residents. There he meets a Replis girl who also calls herself Reu. Her memories are vague and her owner is unknown, so Hiroto takes her in and they start living together.
Life in the small town slowly teaches Hiroto what it means to live with someone. Just as their days settle into a calm rhythm, a mysterious group appears and breaks the peace, pushing the story toward its questions about memory, identity and belonging.
Both scenarios share the same core premise: an artificial being that is alive in every way except for being human. The writing keeps the tone light at first, then lets drama grow around the characters as the player gets to know them.
My Merry May with be suits readers fond of classic Japanese romance ADV stories and retro animated art style. The full high definition rework makes the original presentation comfortable to enjoy on modern screens.
