How to Open .rar and .7z Archives
Game downloads are packed into archives to keep the files intact and make the download smaller. The common formats are .zip, .rar, .7z and sometimes .tar or .cab.
Which program to use
- 7-Zip — free, open source, opens everything including .rar. Recommended. Install it from the official 7-zip.org website.
- WinRAR — also fine; the trial never actually expires.
How to extract
- Install 7-Zip (or WinRAR).
- Right-click the archive → 7-Zip → Extract Here (or "Extract to folder name").
- Wait for the process to finish and open the extracted folder.
Multi-part archives
Large releases are sometimes split into parts: game.part1.rar, game.part2.rar, … Put all parts into the same folder, then extract only the first one (.part1 or .001) — the rest are picked up automatically.
If extraction fails
- "CRC error" or "archive is corrupt" — the download was interrupted. Re-download that part (torrent clients can re-check existing files instead of starting over).
- Make sure the disk has enough free space for both the archive and the extracted files.
