Fix Game Problems: Missing Components
Most "the program can't start because X.dll is missing" and silent-crash problems are caused by absent runtime components. Install the ones the game needs — always from the official sources.
The essentials (install these first)
- DirectX End-User Runtime — required by most games, even on Windows 10/11. Get the web installer from the official Microsoft site.
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables — install every year version from 2005 to 2022, both x86 and x64. Microsoft publishes them as a single combined package page.
- .NET Framework — enable 3.5 and 4.8 in Windows Features (Settings → Apps → Optional features → More Windows features).
Less common components
- NVIDIA PhysX and PhysX Legacy — for older PhysX-based games (official NVIDIA site).
- OpenAL — sound in some older titles.
- Games for Windows — LIVE — only if the game explicitly demands it.
- Microsoft XNA — older indie games built with XNA.
Still not working?
- Update your GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel official site).
- Run the game as administrator once and check the game's own logs or the Windows Event Viewer.
- Read the readme/instructions inside the release — repacks often list known fixes there.
- Ask in the comments under the game — other players usually know the exact fix.
