Utawarerumono Mask of Deception on PC combines a visual adventure game with a traditional tactical RPG. This is a continuation of the original Utawarerumono, which was released on PC in 2002 and then ported to PlayStation 3 and PSP. However, none of these versions officially appeared in the West. These developers are well known to fans of visual short stories and have released many popular episodes such as To Heart, Tears to Tiara, and White Album. The story of Utawarerumono Mask of Deception focuses on a man named Haku who suffers from amnesia. Injured and tormented, he was found by a young girl named Kuon, who takes care of him. The couple quickly makes friends and decides to go on a further journey together.

Battles are fought on three-dimensional maps separated by grids along which all units move. Matches are played in turn-based mode, in which combinations and special skills play an important role. The creators also introduced some arcade elements. When the hero performs an action, a downward circle appears on the screen. When we press the button at the right moment, just before it completely disappears, we activate additional bonuses, such as critical hits. During battles, we must also pay attention to unit resistance and weapon vulnerability, using several basic elements. Utawarerumono Mask of Deception features high-quality two-dimensional graphics. In the tactical part of the game, three-dimensional models are used that do not impress with the number of details, but compensate for the lack of interesting animations and expressive style. The game offers original Japanese voiceovers and a nice soundtrack.
