2016 did something unexpected. It took a twenty year old franchise about shooting demons on Mars and made it relevant again. DOOM didn't just reboot the series. It reminded everyone that first person shooters could be fast, aggressive, and purely fun without needing to be anything else. But the ripping and tearing wasn't the only headline that year. Overwatch launched and immediately consumed the world, turning hero shooters into a cultural phenomenon practically overnight. Dark Souls III closed out the trilogy with the brutal elegance fans had come to expect. And XCOM 2 turned a strategy reboot into something even more tense and rewarding than the original. 2016 kept swinging, month after month.
The quieter side of the year was just as impressive. Stardew Valley arrived from a solo developer and sold more copies than most AAA games, proving that millions of people wanted nothing more than to escape to a pixel art farm. Inside followed up Limbo with a bleak, wordless masterpiece that left players staring at the credits in silence. Firewatch turned two voices on a radio into one of the most emotionally affecting stories of the year. The Witness built an entire island around line puzzles and somehow made it profound. Stellaris let you conquer the galaxy. Civilization VI gave you one more turn, times a thousand. And Dishonored 2, Titanfall 2, and Battlefield 1 all dropped within weeks of each other, creating one of the most stacked autumn lineups in recent memory.
