Banquet for Fools — The gods shun the Vollings, and they turn to paganism to survive. But the Vollings are resilient and hardworking. One lord decides to settle an island long abandoned by a lost civilization, and sets out for the cursed land in hopes of cultivating a lucrative spice that only grows on hillsides. His venture is a success, but trouble quickly closes in on him from all sides. As he prepares to sail to protect his fields from an envious neighbor, he is informed that the entire population of one of his farms has disappeared without a trace. With few options left, he asks his guards to find four volunteers to travel to the other end of the island to investigate the mystery.
