2019 was a year of reinvention. Capcom took Resident Evil 2, a PlayStation classic from 1998, and rebuilt it from the ground up into a modern survival horror masterpiece. FromSoftware followed up Dark Souls with Sekiro, trading RPG stats for pure rhythmic sword combat that demanded you learn or die. Remedy released Control, a mind bending action game set inside a brutalist government building that shifted and twisted around you. And then there was Disco Elysium, a game with no combat at all that became one of the most celebrated RPGs of all time purely through the strength of its writing and the depth of its dialogue trees.

The variety across the rest of the year was staggering. Apex Legends launched out of nowhere and became a battle royale contender overnight. Death Stranding divided critics and players but nobody could stop talking about it. Outer Wilds turned exploration into a time loop puzzle that rewarded curiosity above all else. Devil May Cry 5 brought the series back with the most fluid combat the genre had ever seen. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gave fans the single player Jedi experience they'd been asking for since Disney bought the license. Total War: Three Kingdoms and Anno 1800 dominated the strategy scene. And Metro Exodus took the series above ground into sprawling semi open levels that retained every bit of the series' oppressive atmosphere.
