Animal Crossing: New Horizons turned islands into therapy sessions. Among Us went from a forgotten 2018 indie to a global phenomenon that politicians and pop stars were playing on stream. Fall Guys turned battle royale into a colorful game show. Phasmophobia proved that four friends screaming at ghosts in the dark was endlessly entertaining. Gaming wasn't just a hobby in 2020. It was a lifeline.

The year's biggest story was also its most complicated. Cyberpunk 2077 arrived in December after years of anticipation, and the launch was rocky enough to become its own news cycle. But beneath the controversy was an ambitious, sprawling RPG with some of the best writing and world building of the generation. Elsewhere, Hades left Early Access and immediately became the gold standard for roguelikes. Microsoft Flight Simulator recreated the entire planet. Half-Life: Alyx proved virtual reality could deliver a genuine masterpiece. Crusader Kings III made medieval scheming accessible without losing any depth. Ori and the Will of the Wisps was so beautiful it hurt. And Ghost of Tsushima gave samurai cinema the open world treatment it always deserved.
