Iridium is a retro-style 2D shooter inspired by Uridium, Xenon 2 Mega Blast, Nemesis and Gradius and R-Type. Each game is considered a classic in itself and offers some very unique features, including massive ships, upgrade stores, level ups and a variety of weapons. The game is a multi-directional shooter in which the player is allowed to move freely at each level.

Unlike traditional 2D shooters, in which the screen scrolls at a fixed speed, the player can change speed and return similarly to Uridium. Maps can be very large and often display many enemy ships and other objects at once. Icons representing enemies and other important structures that are not yet on the screen appear at the edges of the screen. This includes a flashing star that indicates where the player must go to complete each level.
