Nier: Automata arrived with a strange, philosophical story told across multiple playthroughs and an unforgettable soundtrack. Divinity: Original Sin 2 raised the bar for what a tactical RPG could achieve with its reactive world and combat that rewarded creativity. And Hollow Knight crawled out of a tiny Australian studio to become arguably the finest metroidvania ever made, with a hand drawn world so dense and interconnected that players are still uncovering its secrets years later.

Horror had a renaissance moment in 2017. Resident Evil 7 returned to the series' roots with a first person perspective and a Louisiana bayou that felt genuinely dangerous to walk through. Prey turned a space station into one of the most intricately designed immersive sims since System Shock. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice used binaural audio to simulate psychosis in a way that was as educational as it was terrifying. And on the lighter side, Cuphead arrived after years of anticipation with hand animated 1930s cartoon visuals that masked one of the most punishing run and gun games ever made, and What Remains of Edith Finch told a family history through a series of playable vignettes that hit like a freight train.
