Prospector begins with an arrival on an alien world with only a set of tools. The primary objective is to gather the planet's resources to build the foundation for a base. Players construct structures, explore the environment, and then set up automated production lines. Construction can range from primitive materials to unknown alien substances found on the landscape.

Slowly, a simple outpost develops into a complex facility with an optimized workflow. Further exploration in Prospector reveals the secrets of distant worlds, from ancient relics to ecosystems unique to each celestial body. Advancement is not without resistance, as territorial species and hostile fauna react to the exploitation of their homelands. These native inhabitants engage in combat, defending their world from invasion using laser weapons and the O.P.H.E.L.I.A. robot companion.

The scale of operations extends beyond a single planet to a system inhabited by other colonies. Discovering these settlements opens up the prospect of intergalactic cooperation and trade. This game allows trade deals with distant outposts to obtain exclusive rewards. Interactions include providing aid, exchanging materials, or studying their societies. Through these actions, the player defines their place in the galactic community, moving from survival to becoming part of the star network.
