Inspired by the Scottish Highlands of the early 2000s, Cairn Mathairs Curse features handcrafted locations. This RPG gameplay revolves around exploring areas ranging from seaside villages and ancient caves to secret high-tech complexes. Progression through the story is based on solving environmental puzzles, unlocking new areas and discovering hidden objects. Solving these puzzles is key to uncovering the underlying conspiracy.

Encounters with unusual enemies occur in a turn-based mode. The team faces enemies including cultists, wild haggis, and animated road signs. Each character in the squad possesses unique abilities that give them an advantage in combat. Tactical success depends directly on skillfully combining the characters' abilities to overcome groups of enemies and progress through the 25-30-hour story.
