In Wander Stars, martial artist Ringo and a scoundrel named Wolf team up to search the universe for pieces of a legendary map. Their alliance becomes the foundation for the search for Ringos brother and the unraveling of Wolf's past a story told across 10 distinct episodes. This space adventure involves forming alliances with a diverse cast of characters, gradually building a true family. The story explores themes of mystery, betrayal, and redemption as the duo journeys between worlds.

The turn based combat in Wander Stars is based on the martial art of Kiai, which uses words to create attacks. Players combine vocabulary from three categories actions like STRIKE, modifiers like SUPER, and elements like FIRE to develop techniques. A character's spirit level determines how many elements can be chained together to perform complex moves. Each word has a cooldown, and enemies have vulnerabilities that must be discovered and exploited. The vocabulary contains over 200 items, allowing you to build strategies based on the available set.

Gameplay revolves around expanding Ringo's vocabulary and earning Pep Ups special combat bonuses. These are earned through fair combat, a principle that can turn former rivals into allies. Each of the ten episodes offers a location to explore, with procedurally generated battles and unique events. This structure encourages re-explore of areas to discover new paths, hidden treasures, and dialogue. Random elements and encounters make each adventure in this game feel fresh.
