Lay of the Land offers a fantasy world where every element obeys the laws of physics. Fire can spread to vegetation, sand crumbles underfoot, torrents of water transform the landscape, and gas pockets can suffocate unwary travelers. Gamers must overcome these natural threats to survive. The core of the gameplay is exploring procedurally generated lands, battling native creatures, and gathering resources for construction.

Combat in Lay of the Land encourages tactical use of the fully destructible environment. Cave ceilings can be collapsed on enemies, trees can be felled on monsters, and breaches can be created in walls for surprise attacks. The player chooses their approach to combat, developing their character into a specialist in melee weapons, ranged attacks, or arcane magic. Defeating enemies yields loot, unlocking new equipment for further development.

This title offers a world to explore, comprised of numerous biomes with unique fauna and remarkable locations. Exploration leads players to overgrown ruins, dangerous temples brimming with treasure, and deep networks of abandoned mines and winding caves. Materials gathered from the surrounding area form the basis of a voxel-based construction system. It allows for the construction of anything from modest homes to majestic castles, and direct modification of the terrain.
