Star Overdrive begins when the protagonist, Bios, follows a distress signal and ends up on the planet Sebete. The central objective is to find his missing lover, Nus, and uncover the mystery behind her disappearance. Bios uses a Keytar and a hoverboard to navigate the world. This journey takes the player through a variety of landscapes, each with its own set of obstacles. Star Overdrives gameplay focuses on high-speed exploration of an open world on a hoverboard. Traversing the terrain requires maintaining momentum and performing tricks on the board to access new locations. This movement mechanic is tied to combat, allowing Bios to engage in fights with opponents. There are a total of 3 biomes in the title, including dunes and ruins, which test the user’s skill in controlling transport.

The keytar serves as a tool for changing the environment and solving puzzles within the ruins. The player gains the ability to influence gravity and release kinetic energy, combining these skills to eliminate threats. Discovering new skills in the buildings of this setting expands the arsenal of techniques in combat and when moving. Collected resources are invested in improving the hoverboard’s performance, affecting its speed and control, and its parts can be changed, customizing its appearance.
