Nightmare Frontier puts players in charge of a group of miners entering a corrupted Klondike town from an alternate 1900s. The squad is sent into the settlement to fight creatures called Dread Weavers, embodiments of human phobias. Missions involve infiltrating the area, collecting resources, and returning safely to base. The events take place on an alternate American frontier, where prospects have taken on a supernatural nature. The gameplay in Nightmare Frontier is built around combinations of well-aimed shots to suppress opponents before closing in. Soldiers are able to push, parry, and combine attacks, changing the balance of power on the battlefield.

Fear and courage mechanics affect the course of battles, allowing you to choose your battles depending on the state of mind of the squad. Progression through the story consists of counter-attacks against the Dread Weavers and clearing out urban areas, which opens up new routes and introduces the group to fresh dangers. Each foray into the city poses a choice: caution or profit, because the further the squad goes, the higher the reward and the risk. This game allows you to deliberately increase the Nightmare Level, making skirmishes more deadly for the sake of large loot. Resources obtained from defeated creatures are used to create and improve weapons that combine early 20th century technology with supernatural alchemy. In between forays, the leader is busy with equipment, investing in new skills and accepting newcomers into the squad, realizing that their personal weaknesses will become bait for specific monsters.
