Overview

Chariots were developed during this period as truly effective weapons on the battlefield. Around 1550 BC the Hyksos were expelled from Egypt, and the period of the New Kingdom began. Under the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, Egypt pursued a more aggressive foreign policy and created a foreign empire in Canaan and Syria. This put it in direct competition with other major international powers of the Late Bronze Age, 1600–1200. e., first the Mitanni, then the Hittites. Most of these great civilizations experienced a major crisis in the late 13th century BC; The Mycenaean and Hittite palace cultures fell, the Kassite Babylonian dynasty fell, the Egyptians left their Asian empire, Ugarit and other Amorite city-states were destroyed.
