Inkborn features a card-based combat system based on the sequential use of Glyphs for tactical effect. Players arrange cards according to specific symbols, triggering chain effects during turn-based encounters with otherworldly creatures. This gameplay is the foundation for progression. The setting is a world made of ink, folded paper, and metal, containing a hidden story to uncover.

The narrative unfolds as players complete expeditions and objectives. Before each expedition in Inkborn, players allocate points in a personal Skill Tree to determine their strategy for the run. Progression involves using Skill Points from previous runs to develop new abilities, with each class having access to 30 different perks to choose from. Between trips, the central City functions as a hub, allowing for better preparation for subsequent runs.

This cycle of expeditions and preparation opens up a variety of approaches to the game's challenges as different builds become available. Moving around the procedurally generated map opens up new paths through the fog of war. The player's choices while exploring this location determine the route to the final encounter of the act. There are over 250 cards to collect, and over 100 combinations can be found during the game. In addition, the world of this project offers 40 scripted events with unpredictable situations and over 100 quotes that give advantages during the run.
