NBA 2K26 brings real-world NBA footage directly into gameplay through ProPLAY, a technology focused on creating responsive controls for dribbling, crossovers, and other dynamic moves on the court. Players compete in multiple modes, including the single-athlete career-focused MyCAREER, the franchise management simulation MyNBA, and the card collecting experience MyTEAM. Additional features like The W and Play Now provide more ways to compete in basketball. These diverse environments allow players to challenge friends or other online opponents in team-based or solo matches.

In MyCAREER, players create their own MyPLAYER and work their way up through the competitive ranks to become an NBA player. Progression takes place in a large urban hub, where players can team up with friends, build their reputation, and engage in team-based turf battles. Separately, the NBA 2K26 title offers MyTEAM, a mode focused on building rosters by acquiring cards of past and present athletes. Assembled teams are tested in a variety of single and multiplayer challenges, and new cards are earned through gameplay and the use of virtual currency in a system that includes elements of gambling.
MyNBA offers a management experience, handing over control to the gamer as the general manager of one of 30 professional teams. Each franchise presents a unique storyline with the goal of building a championship organization and influencing the direction of the league. In addition to these structured formats, direct competition is available through matches and custom tournaments. This sports simulator supports a variety of multiplayer configurations, from online co-op and PvP to local sessions for up to four people on one system, allowing for both cooperative and competitive play.
