Runeborn pits spellcasters against the forces of Malakar in a dark fantasy world. The core combat mechanic revolves around the spinning of Rune Pillars, which function like the reels of a slot machine for casting spells. To deal damage to opponents, players must match symbols on five special paylines. Players can influence the outcome by locking up to eight runes in place while the remaining columns spin, directly affecting the final combination. This approach allows for deliberate control over random outcomes.

The central customization element in Runeborn is the Book of Runes, which serves as a tool for building a Rune Pillars deck. Players actively add, remove, and modify individual symbols on the reels to create a deck tailored to their strategy. Gameplay is further enhanced by amulets and auras enhancements applied to symbols that grant them special properties when activated. This mechanic allows for the creation of unique magical sets that are effective in various battles and suit different playstyles.

A well-developed artifact system opens up additional opportunities for character enhancement and the creation of unique synergies. The game offers 150 different items, allowing for synergies and powerful combinations. These relics often improve combat performance, increasing base damage or activating significant multipliers. Combining the effects of several of these items is key to creating builds capable of dealing with the world's threats and defeating the followers of Malakar.
