Primal Fray is a turn-based tactical roguelike strategy game whose primary objective is to advance through the dangerous Rift. Battles unfold on floating islands with a hexagonal grid, randomly generated with each playthrough. Players must assemble a squad of unique creatures, called Primals, to face off against intelligent enemies and deadly bosses. Successful progress through the Rift depends on carefully selecting the buffs received between battles. Each creature has its own set of four abilities, and the total number exceeds 200, opening up opportunities for synergies. Some abilities consume mana, while others generate it, forcing players to carefully manage their resource management during battle.

In addition to single-player mode, the game offers a local PvP format with hot seat technology, balanced for competitive matches. Primal Fray uses exclusively mirrored maps and a fair draft system in multiplayer battles to ensure a level playing field. To maintain a fast pace, a chess timer limits each turn. This mode allows for free experimentation with squad builds, combining any available primals without any progression restrictions. Furthermore, a built-in editor allows creative individuals to create and share their own battle arenas, constructing unique battlefields.
